NEW!! Attention youth aged players!!

High school aged netball players can now become “Novice Officials”. This will help younger players gain experience coaching and umpiring and at the same time, share the game of netball with elementary school players! This is an excellent opportunity to gain service hours, required for high school graduation. BC netball will support players in running after school programs in local elementary schools. After completing a ten week program in a local school you will be recognized as a "novice official" after demonstrating the basics of umpiring and coaching. Questions?   A head coach and assistant coach will be named in each zone.  Coaches must be NCCP level II certified prior to March 7, 2009, one year in advance of the tournament.  A number of Part B coaching clinics are offered through Coaching BC in the coming months: http://www.coaches.bc.ca/nccp /schedule.html .

OVERVIEW:

To become a certified coach in any sport in Canada requires the successful completion of 3 components: theory, technical and practical, at each level. There are 4 levels to the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). It is recommended that community and high school coaches attain, or are working towards, level 1 certification. Zone coaches (BC Winter games, Under 16/18 Championships) require level 2 and Provincial coaches require level 3 certification. When a member of your club achieves full level 1 coaching certification your CLUB will receive a $50 rebate.

THEORY:

Theory courses are not sport specific. These courses are offered in the community, and, interest permitting, by the B.C. Netball Association from time to time. In December 2005 BCNA hosted a Component A theory course. If you are interested in taking the Part A or Part B theory course please contact netball_coach@bcnetball.net. If there is enough interest BC netball will host a course. If not we can help you find a course in your area.

The Coaching Association of Canada has recently developed an online ethics test. Successful completion of this evaluation is mandatory for coaches of all levels, regardless of when they gained certification. TECHNICAL:

The technical component to certification is sport specific. The British Columbia Netball Association periodically offers technical clinics.

PRACTICAL:

In order to pass the practical component coaches must coach a team for an ongoing period (for level 1, 50 hours, not including matches, is required) and must be observed in action. Please note that hours of coaching should only be recorded after you have completed the theory and technical clinics. Hours cannot be recorded retroactively.

February 2007 will be coaching assessment month! You can also ask to be assessed at another time by contacting netball_coach@bcnetball.net. Please indicate your name, the name of your team and when and where you practice.
